What length of residency is available and when?
The duration of the residency will be three months, starting in the beginning of September 2019 and ending in the end of November 2019.
Who can apply for this residency program?
− The residency is for visual artists with their main place of residence in Austria.
− Please note that applications from students cannot be accepted.
− Applications from artists who previously have participated in TOKAS programs cannot be accepted.
− Excellent English skills (written and spoken) are required.
− There is no age limit for applicants.
− Applicants cannot receive grants from other residency programs during the same period of time.

Can I apply as an artist collective (more than one person)?
No, the residence is for single artists only. Artist duos or teams cannot apply for this program.
Can I bring my partner or family to the residency?
Unfortunately it is not possible to bring a partner or family members.
What language does my application need to be in?
All applications must be submitted in English.
Which material do I have to provide for my application?
− Artist statement (500–1000 characters incl. spaces)
− Motivation letter and project description (1500–2000 characters incl. spaces)
− Narrative Curriculum (1000–2000 characters incl. spaces)
− Work samples (max. 15 files, which can be a combination of images, audio, video, and/or text files)
− Work list (PDF)
Is there an application fee?
No, there is no application fee.
How will the resident be selected?
The decision will be the result of a two-step selection process: KEX will provide a shortlist of three to five artists; the final selection will be made by TOKAS.
When will I hear back?
All applicants will be informed w ith the final decision in January 2019.
What does it cost to participate in the program?
There is no fee to the artist-in-residence.
What funding will I receive?
You will receive 1.300,- € per month for living expenses and a refund for travel costs up to 1.000,- €.
What is required from the artist during a residency?
− You will be encouraged to create new w orks during your stay at TOKAS, but not
required to do so.
− During or towards the end of your residency stay you w ill be asked to present your w ork to the public in an open studio situation and/or via a talk, a presentation or a performance.
What does this program offer the artist during the residency?
− A space to live (private apartment w ith bathroom, toilet, and kitchen)
− A space to work (shared studio space on the ground floor of the same building)
− Guidance and support during your stay at the residency.
− Opportunity to present your w ork to the public in an open studio situation and/or
via a talk, a presentation or a performance.
Will I be the only artist in residence at TOKAS during this period?
No, during your stay about 8–10 other artists from all around the w orld w ill be residents at TOKAS.
Before the residency program starts, the selected artist w ill conclude a contract with Kunsthalle Exnergasse (KEX).
