English-language editor

Spike is seeking an experienced English-language editor to help the current editors in commissioning, reviewing, and editing texts to ensure that Spike retains its reputation for lively, engaging and intelligent prose. Spike believes that art writing needs to be continually pushed beyond the academic/formulaic, and we rely on the dialogue between writers and editors to accomplish that. Key duties include assistance with commissioning/brainstorming; managing and motivating writers; helping shape and polish features, columns and reviews; writing ledes and headlines; fact-checking, copy-editing and proofreading, etc. The job is part-time (20 hours per week on average/issue), but full-time in the production weeks of the print issue (4x/year) and most of the work, especially during production weeks, takes place in Spike’s offices in Berlin. The job is freelance and paid with a lump sum per issue, negotiable depending on experience.

Native-speaker level English
Confidence in shaping prose, rewriting where necessary
Good editorial judgment
A keen eye for detail
Appreciation of nuance and wit
Knowledge of contemporary art
Familiarity with the art world
Familiarity with Spike in print and online
Based in Berlin or willing to relocate
Good communication skills in email and in person
Willingness to occasionally work long hours incl. evenings and weekends


Experience editing art writing
Knowledge of art history
Existing network of contacts / ideas about writers and subjects
Ability and willingness to write, do interviews, and represent Spike in public
